The Alzheimer's Foundation of America's "For the Love of George" Palm Beach
04/01/2011 - By West Palm Beach, FL

Called “For the Love of George,” the cocktail party was aimed at heightening awareness of the brain disorder and raising funds to support programs and services for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, and their families.

As the number of individuals with Alzheimer’s disease in Florida continues to grow, Palm Beach area business executives, healthcare professionals and others embraced the cause as the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) Palm Beach Committee hosted its third annual cocktail party on April 1.

The successful event was held at the home of Madeleine Rudin Johnson in West Palm Beach. The evening featured live entertainment and a silent auction.
“Sadly, Alzheimer’s disease is spreading in almost every part of our nation. In states like Florida, where the number of people being diagnosed continues to grow, it is especially important to gather the community together. Their passion for the cause can drive the issue of care to the forefront and really make a difference in people’s lives,” said Eric J. Hall, AFA’s president and chief executive officer.
Alex and Chris Barnet originated “For the Love of George” to honor their grandfather, George R. Irvin; Irvin, of Quogue, NY and North Palm Beach, FL, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2002 and passed away in February 2008. The Barnet brothers formed the AFA Junior Committee, consisting largely of young professionals, and it held its first fundraiser in New York in 2005. Since, AFA has held similar events in other cities, including Palm Beach, Chicago and Nashville, over the past several years.
Founded in 2008, the Palm Beach Committee is chaired by the Barnet and Dilonardo families, also related to Irvin, and co-chaired by Lillian Johnson, who has been involved in “For the Love of George” committee since its inception in New York, and Madeleine Rudin Johnson, executive vice president of Rudin Management Company, Inc., New York, NY.
